Life Balance? Get real.
There’s just so damn much to do, isn’t there?
How is it even possible to stay energized? To maintain motivation? To keep on keepin’ on with enthusiasm?
It’s tough. And it’s a challenge for every soul who traipses about this planet with hopes of any personal direction or aspiration.
The whole premise of InSuesShoes.com was based upon the inevitable imbalance in life. Even in a recent personal interview I had with the ever-inspiring Angie Hicks (founder of Angieslist.com), she stated balance is not realistic. We just do the best we can.
Any perfectionists out there?
If so, you struggle with the balance battle more than most. I know this because I share your self-inflicted affliction. A lifelong perfectionist myself (yes, I admit it… and accept I’m not very good at it), I’ve learned that while perfection is my aspiration, I must accept my best effort at excellence, regardless of what the outcome looks like.
I cannot conquer 50 to-do’s each day. I cannot meet my deadlines, manage my team, attend to clients, write, design, paint the house, do laundry and finish my novel all in a day. Like a delusional over-achiever, I’ve tried. And I failed. Like, each day. Now, I have learned to accept that (1) I am a flawed human, and (2) I cannot be perfect–but I’ll accept my best excellence.
Did I give it my best shot? Did I put my best fashion-foot forward? If yes, then good for me. And I need to be proud of that, despite what anyone else may (or may not) say.
How about you?
So let’s talk about excellence… it can be the most effective boost to propel us all in the trajectory we foresee for ourselves.
So allow for imperfection. Embrace it. And simply focus on excellence.
Today’s To-Do:
Take a look at your lengthy master to-do list (create one if you don’t have one yet). Then start a fresh sheet. Write numbers 1, 2, 3 on the clean page. Transfer three tasks from the master list, assigning one to-do to each of the three numbers. Ensure each task will provide a sense of accomplishment and purpose to your day.
Then do it: 1, 2, 3. And apply all your focus and excellence to each.
After the third is accomplished, pat yourself on the back. Then make a drink and toast to yourself. To heck with perfection. Instead, cheers to your best excellence for the day.
Accepting imbalance and loving excellent productivity? Hey, it’s easy as 1, 2, 3.
