A timeless classic of love and tragedy, Emily Bronte’s only published novel is the journey of a tempestuous love story between Catherine and Heathcliff. While the story is rather sad, and despite the main characters being unappealingly self-centered (and truly somewhat unlikeable!), the deep love Heathcliff holds for Catherine in their turbulent existence is the contradiction that, we believe, easily captures and holds readers through the end.
If a quick, easy read is what you’re after, this isn’t that kind of love story. The beauty of the English language is present within each line and, in our opinion, adds depth to the dark, yet romantic underlying theme.
Want to add a classic story to your reading library? Give this one a try. Take your time and soak in a world so different from our own—in the cold, damp English moors as created by Bronte—and published in 1847, just a year prior to her own early death.
